Japan Open 2025 Round of 16 Results

Osaka Survives Scare as Cirstea, Fernandez and Danilovic Advance

Naomi Osaka had to fight through the full distance in a gripping encounter against Dutch challenger Suzan Lamens. After squandering a tight first-set tiebreak lead, the Japanese star rediscovered her rhythm behind a heavy first serve to close out the decider with authority, booking her place in the last eight.

Romania’s Jaqueline Cristian also endured a slow start before turning things around. She recovered from a first-set bagel to defeat Spain’s Jessica Bouzas Maneiro, showing grit and cleaner baseline control as the match wore on.

Belgian hopes faded quickly when Elise Mertens was outplayed by Czech qualifier Tereza Valentova, who produced a fearless display.

American Ashlyn Krueger also bowed out, undone by the left-handed flair of Olga Danilovic, who sealed a composed 6-4, 6-4 victory. The Serbian continued her strong indoor run, never allowing Krueger to dictate.

Canadian crowd-pleaser Leylah Fernandez proved too clinical for Hungarian qualifier Dalma Galfi, advancing with her trademark court speed and counterpunching flair.

One of the day’s most dramatic finishes came as Viktorija Golubic clawed back from a rough start to topple Marie Bouzkova. The Swiss player held firm in the closing tiebreak, completing a gritty comeback that underlined her late-season resilience.

Closing the session, Romania’s Sorana Cirstea delivered one of her most authoritative performances of the tournament, dismissing Britain’s Katie Boulter.
