The Korean Open 2025 returns to Seoul from September 13 to 21, bringing the energy of a city that thrives under the spotlight. The tournament has steadily grown into one of the WTA’s signature stops in Asia. Since its debut in 2004, the event has crowned champions as varied as Maria Sharapova, who swept to the inaugural title, Venus Williams, whose power lit up Seoul in 2007, and Caroline Wozniacki, who delivered a near-flawless performance in 2012. Over the years, fans have also witnessed the rise of stars like Karolina Plisková, Agnieszka Radwanska, and Jeļena Ostapenko, each carving their name into the tournament’s rich history.
After a pandemic interruption and a rebirth that elevated the competition from WTA 125 to 250, and now a prestigious WTA 500, the event reached new heights in 2024 when Beatriz Haddad Maia rallied past Daria Kasatkina in a thrilling final. With Seoul’s neon-lit streets buzzing and the draw stacked with world-class talent, the 2025 edition promises to add another dramatic chapter to this tournament that has long blended history, resilience, and the joy of women’s tennis.
Swiatek Survives Seoul Scare to Snatch 25th Career Title
Down a set and two points from defeat, Iga Swiatek pulled off a gritty comeback to capture the 2025 Korea Open title in Seoul, outlasting Ekaterina Alexandrova 1–6, 7–6(3), 7–5 in a tense Sunday final.
What looked like a routine win for Alexandrova turned into yet another showcase of Swiatek’s mental steel. The World No.2 had to dig deep after a flat opening set and a second-set deficit, eventually turning the tide in the tiebreak and carrying that momentum into the decider. It was Swiatek’s third match in just over 24 hours after double duty in Saturday’s quarterfinal and semifinal wins over Barbora Krejcikova and Maya Joint. The Seoul title is her 25th career WTA singles trophy and her 57th match win of the season—more than any other player in 2025.
Ekaterina Alexandrova came out swinging, storming through the first set 6–1 with controlled aggression and baseline firepower. She led 4–3 in the second and looked poised for a straight-sets win. But crucially, she failed to break Swiatek’s serve when it mattered. That missed opportunity allowed the Pole to hang in and force a tiebreak, where she raced ahead 3-0 and 5–2 and sealed the set 7–6(3).
The third set brought more drama. Alexandrova broke first to go up 2–1 and held her ground with confident serving. But Swiatek refused to go away. She broke back for 3–3 and eventually gained the lead at 5–4, despite facing two break points. On her second match point at 6–5, she finally closed it out, letting out a roar of relief. Remarkably, Alexandrova won 11 more points than Swiatek over the match, but it was the Pole who won the ones that mattered most.
“I don’t know how I won it, honestly,” Swiatek said in her on-court speech. “You were just playing great—I was just trying to stay alive.” She also thanked her team, adding, “Sorry for being sometimes… hard. Thank you for the patience. It wasn’t an easy week.”
Alexandrova, visibly disappointed but composed, praised her opponent. “She’s such a great player. I tried to do my best today. It wasn’t enough—maybe next time I’ll do a bit better.”
This title adds to Swiatek’s already decorated season, which includes triumphs at Wimbledon and Cincinnati. As the Asian swing continues, both players now head to the China Open. Swiatek will carry momentum—and an ironclad reputation as one of the game’s fiercest fighters.
