Round of 32 Delivers Surprises and Breakthroughs

The Round of 32 at the 2025 WTA Miami Open brought a mix of upsets, milestones, and promising breakthroughs. One of the standout performances came from Philippine wildcard Alexandra Eala, who shocked fifth seed Madison Keys with a dominant 6-4, 6-2 victory. Eala not only reached the Round of 16 at a WTA 1000 event for the first time, but also made history as the first Filipino player in the Open Era to defeat a top-10 opponent.

Iga Świątek continued her consistent dominance on tour by defeating Elise Mertens 7-6(2), 6-1. With the win, the second seed set a new record with her 25th consecutive appearance in the last 16 of a WTA 1000 tournament, further solidifying her status at the top of the women’s game.

Emma Raducanu also advanced after McCartney Kessler was forced to retire due to injury at 6-1, 3-0. Raducanu will now face Amanda Anisimova in the next round, in what promises to be a tightly contested encounter.

Fourth seed Jessica Pegula survived a major scare against Anna Kalinskaya. After dropping the first set in a tiebreak, Pegula fought back to win 6-7(3), 6-2, 7-6(2), thrilling the Miami crowd.
