Outstanding Support in Brazil
Alexandra Eala is staging a compelling run at the São Paulo Open. The 20‑year‑old third seed brushed aside French qualifier Yasmine Mansouri 6‑0, 6‑2, then defeated Argentina’s Julia Riera 6‑1, 6‑4 to reach the quarterfinals — her third WTA quarterfinal of the year. With Brazilian number one Beatriz Haddad Maia still in the draw, Eala is seen as one of the contenders for the title.
Hospitality Reminds Eala of Home
While competing in South America for the first time, Eala has been full of praise for the crowd support she’s received:
“I said the other day that the Brazilians are super hospitable. That’s one thing I think you have in common with the Philippines, so I’m feeling at home. I loved the atmosphere tonight.”
She added, “Brazil this is my first time, so I’m excited to see the place. I’ve heard a lot of good things about it. Aside from the title I’d love to learn more about the culture and of course. I think my goal is to keep the level that I have and every match, you know, you learn something new.”
Already Breaking New Ground
Eala comes into São Paulo hot off her first WTA title at the Guadalajara 125 event (not to be confused with the WTA 500)— a milestone that has cemented her status as one of the Philippines’ brightest prospects. Despite her youth, she has already delivered breakthrough moments this season: a run to the semifinal at a WTA 1000, wins over established players, and now deep into another tournament. With the crowd behind her and her game hitting form, she appears ready to double down.
