Jasmine Paolini advances to Wuhan 2025 quarterfinals after Clara Tauson retires, sets up clash with Iga Swiatek

Jasmine Paolini continued her strong run at the Wuhan Open, taking another important step toward securing a spot at the WTA Finals in Riyadh. The Italian advanced to the quarterfinals after Clara Tauson was forced to retire early in the deciding set, with Paolini leading 3–6, 6–3, 3–1 after one hour and 33 minutes on court.

All Started Well For Clara Tauson

Tauson started the match with authority, serving efficiently and taking the opening set 6–3 without facing a break point. The Dane’s clean hitting was reflected in her five aces and 8.8% ace rate, giving her an early edge in the exchanges. Paolini, however, found her rhythm in the second set, improving her first-serve percentage to 68% and holding in 70% of her service games. Her improved depth and precision helped her dominate from the baseline, winning four consecutive return games to claim the set 6–3.

From there, Paolini’s control became clear. She posted a Dominance Ratio of 1.14 compared to Tauson’s 0.88 and won 53% of total points played (65 of 122). Her all-court consistency was underpinned by a solid serve rating of 254 and a strong return rating of 185, as she won 47% of return points and converted five of ten break chances. Tauson, by contrast, struggled to maintain her earlier rhythm, winning only 50% of her service games before calling it quits due to injury concerns.

Medical Treatment Required Twice

Tauson received medical treatment late in the second set and again before the decider but was ultimately unable to continue. Paolini, showing composure and maturity, stayed focused despite the interruption, sealing her place in the last eight.

After the match, the Italian underlined how every victory counts at this stage of the season. Her efficient serving — with zero double faults and seven consecutive points won at one stage — highlights her confidence heading into her next challenge.

Paolini will now face world No. 2 Iga Swiatek in the Wuhan 2025 quarterfinals — a high-stakes matchup that could bring her a major step closer to a debut at the WTA Finals in Riyadh.
