Former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki has hit back sharply at Danish commentator Peter Bastiansen after he criticized her for not making a clear decision about her tennis future.
Wozniacki, who gave birth to her third child, Max, in July 2025, is currently on another break from competition. She had returned to the tour in 2023–24 after initially retiring in 2020 at age 29. For now, she’s keeping quiet about whether her latest pause will be permanent.
Bastiansen, a former player and current TV 2 analyst, didn’t hold back in an interview with B.T.:
“I don’t understand why she doesn’t just announce it. What’s the point of keeping it vague? She’ll never return to top-level tennis again. That ship has sailed. Why not simply say it? There’s nothing wrong or unnatural about that.”
He went further:
“I’d fall off my chair if she showed up ready for the Australian Open in January. It would be a parody if she did. Completely unserious. I don’t even know why tournament organizers would bother offering her a wildcard.”
Wozniacki Response
That was enough to make Wozniacki respond publicly. On social media, she wrote:
“Peter Bastiansen has been bullying and personally attacking me in the media for more than 20 years, always talking about things he doesn’t understand.”
Then she let him have it:
“Peter, you’re a clown. As a so-called ‘tennis expert,’ you should at least know the rules. It’s hard to keep up when you’ve never played at a high level yourself.”
Wozniacki clarified that she remains eligible to play:
“I have a frozen world ranking of 71, which means I don’t need wildcards to enter major tournaments. After so many years of training and competing at the top, I’ve earned the right to do what’s best for my family.”
She also took a swipe at Danish media outlets:
“I don’t understand why TV 2, B.T., and others keep quoting him when Denmark has far better tennis experts.”
Bastiansen later responded with a more conciliatory tone:
“I’m not going to get into a war of words. I’ve said what I wanted to say, and now she’s responded — and she absolutely has the right to do so.”
Now 35, Wozniacki’s career includes 30 WTA titles from 55 finals — highlighted by the 2017 WTA Finals (defeating Venus Williams) and the 2018 Australian Open (defeating Simona Halep). One of the most successful players of her generation, she’s proving she still knows how to hit back. This time she did so off the court.
