The Wuhan Open continued into its second day with the completion of the first round and several second-round matches already underway. Iga Swiatek, the No. 2 seed, made a confident start to her campaign with a commanding win over Marie Bouzkova, while Mirra Andreeva suffered an early disappointment, falling to Germany’s Laura Siegemund in her opening match.
The day also saw victories for big names such as Naomi Osaka, Karolina Muchova, and Belinda Bencic, though Emma Raducanu and Jelena Ostapenko were forced to withdraw due to injury.
Iga Swiatek dominates Wuhan Open debut
Iga Swiatek was one of the standout performers of the day, producing a commanding debut at the Wuhan Open with a 6–1, 6–1 victory over Marie Bouzkova in just one hour and 19 minutes. The Pole dropped her serve only once and converted six breaks to cruise past the Czech with ease.
After a painful quarterfinal loss at the China Open, where she entered as the top favorite, Swiatek is determined to get back on track. As the No. 2 seed, she aims to finish her final event before the WTA Finals on a high note, even if little is at stake in terms of qualification.
The six-time major champion still has a chance to challenge Aryna Sabalenka for the year-end No. 1 ranking. To close the gap, however, she will need to win the title in Wuhan and head into the season finale in Riyadh with momentum and belief.
Next, Swiatek will face the winner of Belinda Bencic vs. Elise Mertens in the second round.
Muchova survives three-set battle against Kostyuk
World No. 22 Karolina Muchova had to dig deep once again at the Wuhan Open, battling past Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk (No. 26) in a tense three-set encounter. After more than two and a half hours on court, the Czech emerged victorious 2–6, 6–2, 6–4 to book her spot in the second round.
Kostyuk came out strong, dominating the opening set with two breaks and flawless serving to take it 6–2 after just 41 minutes. Muchova responded with a composed and clinical second set, winning an impressive 75% of her service points compared to Kostyuk’s 48%. The Ukrainian struggled with six double faults, allowing Muchova to level the match with a mirror 6–2 scoreline.
The decider was a tense affair with both players trading breaks early on. Muchova eventually held firm in the key moments, earning the decisive break to move ahead. Serving for the match at 5–2, she was briefly broken back, but she quickly regained control and converted her second match point to seal the win – a testament to her experience and composure under pressure.
With the 2–6, 6–2, 6–4 victory, Muchova advances to the second round, where she will face Magdalena Frech.
“I’m happy I stayed calm and adjusted my game,” Muchova said afterward. “It wasn’t a perfect start, but I kept believing in my chances.”
